1. General information only
Everything published on Artevivo Magazine is provided for general information, education and interest. It is journalism, not advice. It is written for a broad readership and cannot take account of your particular circumstances, your collection, your property, your transaction or your dispute.
You should not act, or refrain from acting, on the basis of anything you read here without obtaining professional advice appropriate to your situation from someone who has examined the facts of that situation.
2. No art-market, authentication or valuation advice
This is the point on which we are contacted most often, so it is stated first and plainly.
Nothing on this Site constitutes, or should be relied upon as:
- an authentication or attribution of any work to any artist, workshop, period or place of origin;
- an opinion on the provenance, ownership history or title of any object;
- a valuation, appraisal, estimate or opinion of the price, market value or insurance value of any object;
- an opinion on the condition of any object, or on the appropriateness of any conservation treatment;
- advice on whether to buy, sell, bid, consign, insure, restore, import or export any object;
- advice on art as an investment. Art is not a regulated financial instrument, past prices are no guide to future prices, the market is illiquid and opaque, transaction costs are high, and attributions are revised. We express no view on the investment merits of anything.
Authentication and valuation are specialist functions performed by qualified experts, artists’ foundations and committees, and auction house specialist departments. Cultural property in Italy is additionally regulated by Legislative Decree No. 42 of 22 January 2004 (the Codice dei beni culturali e del paesaggio), and export, sale and restoration of protected objects may require authorisation from the competent Soprintendenza. Consult them, not us.
3. No legal, tax or financial advice
Our articles refer to statutes, directives, court decisions, UNESCO instruments and regulatory decisions where those things are part of the story. Those references are descriptive and simplified. They are not legal advice, they are not a substitute for reading the instrument itself, and they may not reflect subsequent amendment or case law.
Likewise, references to prices, budgets, funding, tax reliefs for cultural donations, or the finances of institutions are reported as journalism and are not tax or financial advice. Consult a qualified lawyer, notary, commercialista or financial adviser.
4. Accuracy, and the limits of it
We check our facts against primary and institutional sources before publication, and our procedure is described in our Editorial Policy. We nevertheless make no representation and give no warranty that the content of the Site is accurate, complete, current or free from error.
Scholarship changes. Attributions are revised, dates are redated by dendrochronology or archival discovery, restorations reveal that a panel is not what it was thought to be, and excavation reports supersede earlier accounts. An article that was accurate when published may not be accurate when you read it. We date our articles for that reason.
Where sources genuinely conflict — on a dimension, a date of foundation, the number of surviving objects by a maker, an attendance figure — we say so in the article rather than presenting a contested number as settled.
5. Practical and travel information
Opening hours, admission prices, booking requirements, closure for restoration, timed-entry rules, transport arrangements and exhibition dates change frequently and often at short notice. Information of this kind on the Site is accurate to the best of our knowledge on the date of publication only.
Always confirm directly with the museum, church, site or foundation before you travel. We accept no liability for any cost, loss or disappointment arising from a journey made in reliance on information published here, including the cost of travel and accommodation.
Many of the places we write about are churches and active places of worship, archaeological sites with uneven ground, or quarries and workshops that are working industrial environments. Access conditions, dress codes, photography rules and safety requirements are set by those who run them, not by us.
6. External links
We link to museum, university, foundation, government and archive websites because they are the best available sources. We have no control over those sites. A link is not an endorsement of the linked organisation, its views, its products or its data practices. We are not responsible for the content or availability of any external site, nor for any loss arising from your use of it. Links may break or come to point somewhere else entirely.
7. Images and third-party material
Images are captioned with the work, its date, its collection and, where applicable, the photographer and the licence. Public domain status is assessed in good faith on the basis of the information available to us, principally the licensing information published by Wikimedia Commons and by the holding institution.
Copyright status differs between jurisdictions, and a work in the public domain in one country may not be in another. Reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works may attract separate rights in some jurisdictions. If you intend to reuse an image you find here, verify its status yourself in the country where you intend to use it. We do not warrant that any image may be reused, and we give no licence to do so.
If you hold rights in material published here and believe it has been used without authorisation, our DMCA Policy tells you how to have it removed, and we act on complete notices promptly.
8. Opinions
Reviews, critical assessments and commentary published on the Site are the honest opinions of their authors, held on the basis of the facts stated, and are published as fair comment on matters of public interest. They are not statements of fact and should not be read as such. Opinions expressed by a contributor are the contributor’s own and are not necessarily those of Artevivo Edizioni S.r.l.
Quotations from named individuals are reproduced from documented and published sources, and are cited as such. Where a person’s words are paraphrased rather than quoted, the text makes that clear.
9. Commercial content and affiliate arrangements
Where an article is commissioned, funded or influenced by a commercial party, it is labelled at the top of the piece as sponsored or as a paid partnership, in accordance with our Advertising page.
Where the Site uses affiliate links, from which we may receive a commission on a purchase at no additional cost to you, this is disclosed on the page containing them. An affiliate link never determines whether or how we cover something, and it does not change the price you pay.
10. Availability and technical matters
We do not warrant that the Site will be available uninterrupted, that defects will be corrected, or that the Site or its server is free of viruses or other harmful components. You are responsible for the security of your own devices and for maintaining your own anti-virus protection.
11. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, and subject to the limits set out in section 11 of our Terms and Conditions, Artevivo Edizioni S.r.l., its directors, employees and contributors exclude all liability for any loss or damage of any kind arising from the use of, or reliance on, any content published on this Site.
Nothing in this Disclaimer excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, and nothing in it affects the mandatory rights of consumers under Italian Legislative Decree No. 206/2005 or under the law of a consumer’s country of residence.
